Ensconced west of Cheyenne Wyoming real estate, the F.E. Warren Air Force Base Intercontinental Ballistic Missile and Heritage Museum brings the past century of military life alive.  Located in the 1900s Army commander’s headquarters, the Museum offers the public a glimpse into the once-strategic military location for Cheyenne real estate.

Military residents of Cheyenne WY homes easily gain access to the facilities.  For security reasons, visitors must contact the museum for tour information.  During a search for ranches, land or homes in Cheyenne, Fort D.A. Russell Days in August offers a great time to get a glimpse of the museum and much more.

Attended by veterans and re-enactors from near and far, the huge open house highlights the mission of F.E. Warren AFB, Cheyenne land, and our heritage.  Visitors examine war relics while mingling with U.S. cavalry soldiers and veterans from the Korean and Vietnam wars.

The AFB is the oldest active base in the Air Force, although it no longer features an airstrip to provide an air show.  Driven by a creative enthusiasm, the Warren ICBM/Heritage Museum director plays the event for all its worth.  Dressed in traditional pioneer garb with bonnet, Paula Taylor heads a team of volunteers to immerse 15,000 visitors in life at Warren.  Over 400 pioneer, cavalry, and U.S. war re-enactors participate.

Fort D.A. Russell Days celebrates the “Muskets to Missiles” heritage of Warren.  The base evolved from a frontier infantry and cavalry post into the largest strategic missile defense facility in the nation.  Early troops endured barebones living in wood frame quarters, built in 1867 to withstand the harsh winter wind.  As the weather warmed, then the obstacles changed.  Fort D.A. Russell endured Great Sioux Indian Wars and others.  The Museum tells the tales of these and others such as the Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, and site of the Minuteman Is and IIIs before their transfer to Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado.

During the festivities, the Air Force band performs while current troops and Korean/Vietnam vets host displays.  There are tours of historic homes and missile missions and good food at the Buffalo Burger Barn.

Fort D.A. Russell became Francis E. Warren Air Force Base in 1949.  Check out the Warren ICBM/Heritage Museum to explore why.
